Antique Victorian Roller Ball Albert Chain 9ct Gold

A grand antique Victorian Albert chain made up of 9ct gold curb links with faceted roller ball links in between that roll smoothly across the skin. Each link is stamped “375/ 9ct” and lead to a T-bar at the bottom and a pair of claw clasps at the top that are also stamped and bear the maker’s marks.

Albert chains were named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope the return home safely.

The piece dates to the late 19^th Century and is a solid chain with a good weight that can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a fabulous necklace.
