ANTIQUE VICTORIAN SILVER VINAIGRETTE LOCKET DATED 1884
This has to be the first ever Silver Vinaigrette locket we have ever had the pleasure to exhibit for sale.
Sterling Silver antique vinaigrettes are small decorative boxes that were used during periods of travel, as a more accessible and practical alternative method of carrying perfume and scents than moving large glass bottles and vials.
During the 19th century vinaigrettes were a fashionable indication of social ranking, as those who were able to afford perfume or concern themselves with their outward appearance at all were among the elite.
Perfume was also an exotic extravagance, so to be able to both afford perfume and then contain it within a decorative vinaigrette was the height of social distinction and a display of grandeur and wealth.
This fabulous locket is fully hallmarked Sterling Silver Birmingham dated 1884.
The locket lifts from the bottom up on a hinge, this is where you would apply your cotton wool soaked in perfume.
The inside of the locket is Silver gilded with Gold.
A beautiful locket which is steeped in history and purchased in London.
Weighs 17.4 grams.
Measures 50mm down, including loop x 30mm across.
Excellent all round condition.
