This fabulous Victorian Whitby Jet brooch boasts a beautiful central Cameo, depicting a fine noble man.
A genuine Victorian piece, Circa 1870.
The Cameo is hand carved from Angel Skin Coral and executed with high relief workmanship.
From the depths of the sea, comes the beautiful Angel Skin Coral which is produced by tiny life forms.
Same as Pearls, Coral is a water element of fiery colours such as petal pink known as Angel Skin.
Whitby Jet was brought to the attention of the world by Queen Victoria who used Whitby Jet as part of her mourning attire.
Jet is a type of brown coal a fossilised wood from an ancient tree similar to the monkey puzzle tree.
On the reverse a Base Metal back, complete with original pin and C catch.
There is a slight chip on the Cameo, this is minimal wear for its age.
Today Whitby Jet is highly collectable and sought after world wide.
Weighs 27.8 grams.
Measures 42mm across x 49mm down.
The Cameo measures 26mm across x 33mm down.
