ANTIQUE VICTORIAN WHITBY JET PENDANT CIRCA 1870
This wonderful genuine Whitby Jet pendant is set with a lovely cameo carved from Angel Skin coral.
The hand carved Angel Skin coral depicts a portrait of a lady, with lovely high relief workmanship.
Whitby Jet is an intense hard black substance, closely allied to coal, and very light in weight, and good for carving.
Whitby Jet was brought to the attention of the world by Queen Victoria who used Whitby Jet as part of her mourning attire. Jet is a type of brown coal a fossilised wood from an ancient tree similar to the monkey puzzle tree. Today Whitby Jet is highly collectable and sought after world wide.
It is the fossilised wood of an ancient tree, similar to our present-day Araucaria or Monkey-puzzle tree.
These flourished in the Jurassic Period about 180 million years ago.
When the trees died, they fell into rivers,and were swept down into the sea,where they lay on the Ocean floor for millions of years.
The white of the Angel Skin coral, suffused with pink, is regarded as particularly precious.
This really is special, it looks wonderful when worn.
